Josh Allen is Better than Patrick Mahomes

In the 2017 NFL draft the Chiefs used a pick that they obtained from the Bills to draft Patrick Mahomes. That season in the middle of a rebuild the Bills went on to accidentally make the playoffs. The Bills still needed a quarterback and traded up in the 2018 draft to select Josh Allen 7th overall.

After the 2020 season both of them met in the AFC championship game. Mahomes won that matchup and went on to get destroyed by Tom Brady in the Super Bowl. The Bills made mistakes on offense and defense as well as making very poor coaching decisions.

The two teams met again this this year in the Regular season and then the playoffs. The Bills won the first game and then lost in heartbreaking fashion in the playoff game. I'm not going to debate the overtime rules, but many people were ready to completely change them to either the college football OT rules, or to play an entire 15 minute period and keep going from there if the game were still tied. The college rules would be a fine way to finish the game, but unlimited overtime until one team has a lead at the end of the 15 minute period would cause too many injuries.

Both QBS threw 5 touchdowns in their wild card games. And in the Divisional Round they both played well. Allen played better and was let down by his defense and his coaching staff. There was never a reason to hand the ball of three times in a row and then punt. Throwing the football with Josh Allen would have allowed the Bills to go down the field and get at least 3 points, that could have been the difference in the game.

In the AFC title game Mahomes played a great first half. He had three TDs and a near perfect passer rating. He actually was perfect until the drive to close out the first half in terms of rating.

On the last drive of the first half the Chiefs were inside the 1 yard line 10 seconds to play. This could have been three shots at the end zone and a FG attempt. Instead Mahomes cost the team half time time on the first play on a scramble instead of just throwing the ball right after the snap. The second play took the rest of the time off the clock.

The Chiefs go the ball to start the second half and could do nothing with it. The Bengals defense did not play better than the Bills did last week. Mahomes choked the game away. He was missing throws he usually makes without issue. The Bengals did not allow a touchdown for the final 36 minutes of regulation. It was not because of elite defense. It was because of an historical collapse by Mahomes and the Chiefs offense.

Mahomes missed his recievers more often than he hit them in the second half. And then in overtime he almost threw an interception to Eli Apple, who just last week was in a twitter beef with the cities of New Orleans and New York. He followed that up with the worst interception I thought I would see yesterday. This led to a Bengals field goal.

The Bengals have never lost an AFC title game. Mahomes has now lost two. Of course the first one was the overtime controversy. But this loss and last year's Super Bowl are on Mahomes. That was the worst playoff performance I have seen in back to back championship games since Aaron Rodgers in the NFC title games.

The Chiefs no longer have a cheap QB. Mahomes cap hit goes from $7 million this year to $36 million next year. I believe their Super Bowl window has just closed.
