Hank Green Ruined Public Education! Is Tik Tok next?
Hank Green is an author, an online content creator, and a person that owns several multi million dollar businesses. He and his brother have been content creators online since at very close to the beginning of the ability to share content on YouTube. There was Vlog brothers at first. I have no problem with that content existing. The issue I have is with Crash Course and SciShow.
Right now there is a shortage of qualified teachers across the entire United States. A lot of this can be explained by lack of decent pay for teachers. My local district until about a year ago had custodians and first year teachers making the same starting salary when the custodian's hourly rate was converted to an annual salary. This was without overtime. The schools only required a background check to become custodians. A masters degree is required to be a teacher in the state of New York.
The Green brothers created Crash Course as a way to share the general curriculum of the United States that is tested on standardized tests to people. This of course made them money. It also allowed for less qualified people to become teachers because now instead of actually knowing the material they could just put the Crash Course videos on in their connected classroom. And instead of actually making their own assignments they would use the ones textbook publishers created only. Those are guides and the answers to those assignments including the tests are generally able to be found by students online.
SciShow did not ruin learning for pre college students, but it has a pretty bad track record on a number of very important issues. They have been wrong on a number of topics ranging from GMO food to Covid 19. For a group of people that claim to believe in science a large amount of pseudoscience and United States propaganda ends up seeping into those videos.
Hank Green made a video complaining about the rate of pay that TikTok gives its creators in their creator fund. This is something that people are not allowed to disclose except to a tax professional or an attorney as detailed in the creator fund agreement that all of the creators in it agree to. He determined that the platform was only paying creators 9% of the revenue they generated while Youtube was paying creators 55% of the revenue they generate. I do not know where he got these numbers, but a video sharing site for short form content is going to pay a lot less per view than a video sharing site that hosts long form content.
I know of only one way to fit as many advertisements as their are on long form content into the 180 second maximum time that TikTok allows videos. And that would be a motor race where everything is sponsored.
While TikTok could likely pay creators more even if it did so each individual might only see a few more pennies per day as it would be divided among all of the people eligible to monetize their content on the platform.
While Hank may think that the things he does are helping realistically like everything else he has ever done this is just another attempt to create more profit for himself and add value to his personal brand.
I do not understand how Hank Green has not had a major scandal to date, especially considering the accusations that his brother received years ago that thankfully turned out to be false.
